Inspired by Michelangelo's Pieta in St Peter's and Annibale's Carracci's Pieta , now in the Lovre, Chiari's painting captures the tragedy of the death of Christ in the faces of Christ, the Virgin, Mary Magdalen and two angels. Other dramatic details include Jesus' nail scarred feet (the nails are also visible at the bottom of the picture), crown of thorns and the three crosses where Jesus and two others were crucified.
