Lauri takes as his theme the story of Erminia from Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered . Disguised as a soldier to get close to her beloved Tancred, Erminia is mistaken for an enemy and attacked by Tancred's own forces. Erminia flees and finds protection with a lowly shepherd and his sons whose simple, pastoral life has an appealing beauty.
