Mary Magdalen, the prostitute redeemed by Christ, inspired many of the painters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Maratta gives us a repenting Magdalen folding her hands over a Bible while an angel holding a crucifix instructs her in the way of her Redeemer. The skull in the foreground is perhaps a reminder for unbelievers of the destiny that awaits us all.
